I was hoping you could check on him if you haven't already. With Pepper Potts gone, he may need a friend, and though he claims not to have or need any, I think he's just got his head up his ass. He mentioned your name as a possible friend. If you DO check on him, please don't mention me. He'll only get defensive.
Not that he doesn't have his head up his ass, but it's fine. I've checked on him.
[Notably he doesn't say that Tony is fine, but Bruce isn't about to reveal any more of Tony's emotional state to a perfect stranger than he just did. Which is to say, he's not going to reveal any. He understands the need to keep that private better than anyone.]
Thank you. If there's anything I can do, please let me know.
[ She should ask if he has the Hulk under control. Unless... What are the odds that a Bruce Banner in another universe isn't a Hulk? Is he from another universe? With Tony knowing him, she'd assumed, but perhaps she might get lucky after all. ]
Do you recognize my name, by any chance? Or Agent 13? I was Steve's liaison with SHIELD.
[ And, briefly, Steve's fiance. But no one here needs to know that. No one here will ever know that, not if she has anything to say about it. ]
[Asking about how much he has the Hulk under control is one way to put him from uncertain and guarded to high alert defensive. He tends to take it poorly when military or SHIELD agents ask him about his control.
So far, though, he's just tentative and feeling her out.]
No. Sorry. Which Steve? From mine or the one that was here?
[He's shelving that offer of help for now because he's certainly not going to accept any on Tony's behalf from someone he doesn't know. But maybe he'll get to know her on her own.]
[ She'd suspected as much. You can't get launched into space by your supposes friends and not have issues after. Though admitted, she knows nothing about this Bruce except that he and Tony are evidently friends. ]
The one not from Tony's world. I'd only just met the one from his world.
[ And might have scared him or pissed him off. No guilt. No guilt at all.
Okay, maybe a little, but not enough to feel bad. ]
[That definitely has some consequences in 616... Meanwhile, in MCU, Bruce thinks of Tony as nothing more than an astonishingly trustworthy friend. It's not a common thing for him.]
So why are you so concerned about Tony? This one not the same as yours.
I think he's a good person. I lost Steve. Tony lost Pepper. I don't think he should suffer if he doesn't have to.
[ Tony might actually have friends here. And if he does, that's good. He doesn't deserve to be alone. She has Bucky and Rikki, but some part of her knows that as much as she cares for them, they'll never make up for losing Steve and Peggy. ]
Fair enough. Distraction is probably the best thing you can do for him.
[Bruce might not be willing to share what he knows about Tony's mental state, or discuss his own relationship with him (God forbid he exhibit emotional honesty), but if she's really that committed to helping him then he can pass along the tip JARVIS gave him.]
[ Oh, thank God. She'd hate to sit down the Hulk - or a man who might be the Hulk - and have a chat about what's appropriate and how lining up girls for Tony Freaking Stark is not appropriate. Also, Sharon's seduction skills pretty much don't exist. ]
I'll work on it. If he's anything like the Tony I know, one suggestion that he can't solve something, and he'll be up the rest of the night working on it.
That must be universal. Tell him you need something built. That's what I did. Also happened to be true.
[It's not like he'd lied to him, even for his own good. Bruce had just been a little more forward about projects he wanted done than he would be otherwise.]
[ She wants to push for a meeting, perhaps, or for more information, but she knows the Banner in her universe doesn't always take such gestures well. It might be better to go at this more slowly.
So for now, she merely signs off. They can talk later. She'll just hope he doesn't disappear on her. ]
Depends on the fuel source. [Just because he's a nuclear physicist doesn't mean he knows everything there is to know about energy sources. He'd never gotten into the energy business, anyway. But what he doesn't know, he's sure Tony does. That is his field.]
What are you looking at?
audio; Jor-El's suite | Shortly after Kara's departure
[Most people do not understand Kal's bond with his family- his biological family. They don't understand the bond he has with every single little thing from Krypton, as irrelevant as it might seem to an outsider.
They assume he's overprotective, annoying and needy. And all of that is true. But they don't know what growing up thinking he was alone, that he was the only legacy a whole species, a whole planet had left. He'd latched onto every little thing, every little memento of the planet he had been born into but never known. And then Kara had arrived.
Kara was the only other Kryptonian left, and the moment he'd met her and heard her speak Kryptonian to him- perfectly unguilded Kryptonian, with no trace of accent- he'd promised himself he'd protect her no matter what. And now she's left, and he hasn't kept his promise.
So he does what his ancestors always did, and tries to give it a scientific focus.]
[Bruce has noticed Kara's absence. He'd liked her, honestly, and he'd appreciated having someone to work with that he got along with easily and that could contribute a novel, technologically oriented perspective to the work. Admitting whatever feelings he has about those that disappear is another story.
They don't know what happens when someone vanishes, but Bruce is betting they don't go home, and that it isn't pretty. That nauseating thought is one he's been trying to avoid.
All he says when he's called is,] No, it's fine. What is it?
[Part of him was hoping Bruce would dismiss him saying he was busy- not because he didn't like interacting with the man, far from it. He'd always liked talking to people who were actually smart and capable of lateral thinking- he's always been more of an information-gatherer.
But at least that way he wouldn't feel like he was tossing his worries at the man just to make himself feel better.]
I was wondering if you were making any... any headway on why some people leave, and others have stayed on the turtle since the very beginning. I was wondering if there were some... signs, I guess, to know if someone was doomed to leave soon.
I've got the design schematics laid out to build a shuttle. Nothing fancy, definitely not warp-capable. Just something that could maybe ferry sick or injured people around in a crisis, or keep them up in the air out of a fight if the buildings aren't secured. I'm stumped on the propulsion system, electricity wouldn't generate enough power, and last I checked there's no dilithium lying around. I'm open to suggestion.
[He's totally got a pencil stuck over one ear, the schematics are stretched out in front of him. Jim took enough engineering courses in the Academy to make it stick, even if he's nowhere near Scotty's level, and building an outright engine is probably beyond his current level of expertise.]
[Bruce gets the sense that Jim's "nothing fancy" is not like his definition. Really, he sees the use for a shuttle, and he could probably find a solution to the propulsion problem if he worked on it long enough. Or...]
I could give it a shot, but I'd-- honestly, you should talk to Tony. This is what he does. What'd take me a week on this, he could do in a day.
[Suddenly slightly cautious,] I... wouldn't mention you spoke to the one before him. It's just easier if you don't.
We can work together on it if it makes you feel better. [Smoothly evading that I like you. This is a trust issue, right? Trust issues make sense to Bruce.]
[Bruce has given up predicting how Tony is going to react to this multiples issue. It never makes any sense to him-- he just gets left with the fallout. Might as well prevent it if he can.
And he's more willing to admit to actual friends at this point, but it still feels a lot safer if he doesn't. For their safety, not his.]
I... Yeah, I do. [He sounds entirely rueful to admit it.] And maybe you can explain to us what you're doing with diatomic lithium as a fuel source back home.
