Hydroponics Garden Plot
This is the overall reference post for the plot. Anyone who wants to be involved is totally welcome handwaving talking to someone about it and dropping their character in! Just make sure you comment below so we know that they're involved, as we need an accurate count to estimate NPC involvement.
What is hydroponics?
A good, fairly detailed overview is over here if you want the nitty gritty, but basically it's growing plants using nutrient-rich water instead of soil.
Why are they bothering?
An indoor hydroponics set up allows the plants to be kept completely isolated from the exterior environment, and therefore should not be affected by whatever illness is killing off the regular plants on the turtle. The nutrient solution is pumped automatically through the piping by a filtration system, so nothing from the outside is introduced to the plants and they're kept isolated. You should note that characters entering the garden will need to carefully sterilize themselves first-- it's really kind of a hassle-- because if they bring any bacteria in with them, it'll completely ruin the entire point of the garden.
Where is it and what does the building look like?
Earth sector, a large warehouse co-sponsored by Tony Stark (MCU) and the local kedan. The layout was mostly designed by Annabeth. Also, since any power outages would be hugely devastating to the crops, there are several generators and backup generators on site built by the science contingent.
What set up do they have?
They are using a nutrient film technique with sodium-halide conversion bulbs suspended from the ceiling. (You are not required to know anything about this, trust me-- this is more for my own reference.)
Who is involved? What about NPCs?
The original idea was Bruce's (hence it being in my journal), but he hates dealing with people on a large scale so he recruited Annabeth to be the organizer. It runs as a co-op, which means that anyone who wants to volunteer is more than welcome; the amount of food they receive upon harvest time will be proportional to the time commitment they put into the garden. More work done means more produce.
Characters who ask nicely for a special dispensation of some kind will probably receive it.
How much is being grown will be proportional to how many characters are involved, with each PC bringing in several assumed NPCs along with them. The local kedan are quite interested in this and the project itself is helping improve relations between foreigners and kedan. The garden dutifully contributes its required allotment to the rationing without fuss, and any excess would be donated to it beyond that.
What do they actually do on their shift?
Upon initially volunteering, they will receive a quick training session with someone who is already versed in how things work. You can ask one of the other existing participants if you want an excuse for CR or a thread, or you're welcome to handwave that they asked Bruce and he led them through it.
Most critical to this is that they remember the sanitization procedures before entering the warehouse. These will be enforced strictly, and the seriousness of maintaining them impressed upon them. Once they've changed into sterilized clothes (probably just boring cheap kedan clothes), in the garden itself they will do fairly monotonous, repetitive maintenance tasks. This includes checking all of the nutrient filters, water flow in the pipes, dead-heading the plants, germinating seeds, harvesting and storing produce, changing light bulbs, etc. etc.
The only major difference from regular gardening will involve the water filtration system, the grow lamps, and regularly testing the pH of the nutrient solution. If it doesn't land within a certain range, they need to contact one of the science people quickly so that it can be adjusted. I'll spare you the lecture about the importance of pH in plant growth, but suffice to say they learned how to read some gauges.
What crops are being grown?
Lettuce
Spinach
Tomato
Basil
Peppers
Carrots
Potatoes

REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
no subject
What they do there: Harvesting, dead heading plants. Because of the sterlization thing (honestly he never bathes it's p gross), he's only really going to come in when he's bored--maybe once, twice a month? If there's not a huge event going on he'll be in a little more frequently, but not by much.
Special talents: Nope! Unless being a rambunctious lil shit counts.
CR opportunities: Gavroche MAY or may not try to steal some more for les amis/take more than he should. It's the whole street kid thing--he's used to trying to cut rules a little bit. He's also going to have a fuss whenever he needs to be clean, but that's typical fare for a 12 year old French Revolutionary.
Re: REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
What they do there: Bruce suggested that Jack might be useful for flash freezing produce once it's harvested, so he'd be on call for "as needed" basis?
Special talents: See above.
CR opportunities: YES PLZ. Shoot me a PM or ping me on Plurk for anything specific.
no subject
What they do there: Probably mainly just working doing basic-level things, since her experience is not in gardening. Will probably have a tendency to hum/sing to the plants, though. They like that, right?
Special talents: Amelia has the ability to purify and/or create water and has let Bruce know he can use this ability as needed.
CR opportunities: Always open for CR!
I love everything about this!
What they do there: Whatever role is assigned to her and basic monitoring duties I guess. Probably will be there every other day if not every day.
Special talents: Waterbending (Water Purification, Temperature Control, Hydrokinesis) Earthbending (Compaction, Dispersal, Terrakinesis), Firebending (BIG help here), limited Airbending (Powerful Aerokinesis, not much help either).
CR opportunities: YES.
Re: REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
What they do there: Whatever she's assigned
Special talents: She's a magic user, and can purify water and use spells to improve plant health.
CR opportunities: Yes please!
Re: REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
What they do there: Harvesting, new planting. He'd come in about every other day or so, unless something else big is going on, because Asbel Lhant is easily distracted.
Special talents: Not unless the power of friendship makes plants grow faster.
CR opportunities: Asbel's here to help but he doesn't know much about flowers aside what he absorbed from his mother and adopted daughter, so he's really likely to make mistakes! That said he's pretty friendly, so I am totally down for all the things. Just shoot me a PM or ping me on plurk.
no subject
What they do there: Whatever he is assigned to. Checking stuff, dead-heading, harvesting and storing, etc. All the things. He'd try to come in at least every other day, if not more.
Special talents: Alas, no.
CR opportunities: Very open to CR things! Feel free to PM or ping or as you like it.
Re: REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
What they do there: Usually whatever needs doing. Zel is the type to be interested in things, so he'd be happy to learn how things work on a more detailed level (and will be thinking about it anyway, but he's working from a Renaissance level* of technology). He'll be by often enough to make sure he has fresh vegetables regularly, but probably no more.
Special talents: Zel can create water via magic, and has ability to make fire/freeze things.
CR opportunities: Yes
* Sort of? Biological science is rather a bit ahead thanks to magic.
Re: REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
What they do there: Helping with tomatoes mainly, about an hour per day.
Special talents: N/A
CR opportunities: Absolutely open to any CR from this.
So my only concern is that Hayley doesn't actually know about this yet. Are we okay to handwave that she stumbled across it and then volunteered to help? Because she actually would, for the food and something to do.
Re: REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
What they do there: Whatever's needed for maintenance, construction, etc. He'd also be willing to help with a little gardening here and there, but only as specifically requested.
Special talents: N/A
CR opportunities: Yep.
Assume Bruce asked Costigan to help or mentioned it and Costigan offered?
Re: REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
What they do there: Heat, almost never.
Special talents: FIRE
CR opportunities: Yeah totes
Honestly, I'm just commenting because Johnny would be available to help out with heating the facility or any plants if needed, but I plan on him basically never being there (only by specific request).
Re: REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
What they do there: He'll do whatever he's assigned to do. Gardening, construction, monitoring, security, whatever's needed. He'll come by about 3-4 days a week.
Special talents: He's got lizard powers. They probably won't help much for plan care. He's got some experience farming and taking care of crops though so that might be useful.
CR opportunities: Sure.
no subject
What they do there: Anything that needs doing - tending, checking plant health, keeping them maintained. Daily.
Special talents: No relevant superpowers, just experience in growing stuff.
CR opportunities: YES YES YES and YES
Re: REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
What they do there: Gardening! She probably swings by about two or three times a week
Special talents: She is unfortunately just a badass normal
CR opportunities: I would absolutely love to snag some CR out of this! Katniss is standoffish, but she knows a lot about food and a lot about plants, so she'd probably be a surprisingly useful source of information.
I AM LATE sorry
What they do there: Anythng basic. Tending the plants, harvesting, removing dead plants, etc. He'll be there fairly frequently, I think, stopping by every day or several times per week.
Special talents: ...he makes things purty. So basically nothing applicable.
CR opportunities: Anyone who wants to run into him, really. Cinna likes soothing and quiet places, this is a soothing and quiet place, he's totally happy. In the long run I can see him being very gifted, since he's got a naturally delicate touch and he's very observant, and additionally his people skills are ovar 900 so if they wanted to put him to work training or helping out people who need special assistance, I'm sure he'd be willing to. And god at it.
Re: REGULAR VOLUNTEERS
What they do there: Whatever needs to be done? haha no really, probably harvesting, planting, um...really, just basic things that she can just jump in to do. She'll probably show up 2-3 times a week, just to have something useful to do.
Special talents: She talks to plants. she's a plant whisperer. Except not really.
CR opportunities: I'm definitely up for others contacting me if they're interested in doing something with this!
no subject
What they do there: Planting things, watering them, probably even climate control if it's needed. As she has her own garden, she'll be coming every other day, or at least try to.
Special talents: She's a god. She can basically tap her tail on things and plants will grow. Anything she makes either grows and matures instantly or takes a few seconds.
CR opportunities: Yessssss come at me.
IF I AM NOT TOO LATE
What they do there: Manual labor of any flavor, he's not afraid of any of it. No mater how dirty. He can show up daily for a couple of hours, more if it's needed?
Special talents: None. He's... a good worker?
CR opportunities: I'm absolutely good.
no subject
What they do there: Ava likes helping and hates sitting around so she'd use this as a way to kill her free time.
Special talents: She has enhanced strength and speed but that probably doesn't help much tbh
CR opportunities: Yes very open! Ava needs to learn most of this herself, but shewould be willing to teach people once she got the hang of things.
no subject
What they do there: Two/three times a week, basic tasks and general maintenance.
Special talents: HE WILL USE HIS STRENGTH FOR HELPING HAUL THINGS???
CR opportunities: Yes I would love CR with others involved.
